Jdg 1:1 Après la mort de Josué, les Israélites consultèrent l’Eternel pour savoir quelle tribu devait aller la première attaquer les Cananéens.

Jdg 1:1 After Joshua's death, the Israelites asked the Lord which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites.

2 L’Eternel répondit : C’est Juda qui ira la première : je livre le pays en son pouvoir.

2 The Lord answered, "Judah will go first; I will give the land into their power.

3 Alors les hommes de Juda dirent à ceux de Siméon, frère de Juda : Venez avec nous à la conquête du territoire qui nous a été attribué. Nous combattrons ensemble les Cananéens. Ensuite, nous vous aiderons également à conquérir le territoire qui vous est échu.

3 Then the men of Judah said to the men of Simeon, Judah's brother: Come with us and conquer the land which has been given to us. Together we will fight the Canaanites. Then we'll also help you conquer the territory that has been allocated to you.

Les gens de Siméon se joignirent donc à eux,

So Simeon's men joined them,

4 et Juda se mit en campagne. L’Eternel leur donna la victoire sur les Cananéens et les Phéréziens. A Bézeq, ils battirent dix mille hommes.

4 And Judah went into battle. The Lord gave them victory over the Canaanites and the Perizzites. At Bezek they defeated ten thousand men.

5 En effet, ils tombèrent là sur le roi Adoni-Bézeq et l’attaquèrent. Ils battirent les Cananéens et les Phéréziens.

5 Indeed, there they fell on King Adoni-Bezek and attacked him. They defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 Adoni-Bézeq s’enfuit, mais ils le poursuivirent, s’emparèrent de lui et lui coupèrent les pouces des mains et des pieds.

6 Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him, seizing him and cutting off the thumbs of his hands and feet.

7 Adoni-Bézeq s’exclama : Soixante-dix rois, dont on avait coupé les pouces des mains et des pieds, ramassaient les miettes qui tombaient sous ma table. Dieu m’a rendu ce que j’ai fait.

7 Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings, whose thumbs were cut off, were collecting the crumbs from under my table. God has repaid me for what I did.

On l’emmena à Jérusalem et c’est là qu’il mourut.

He was taken to Jerusalem and died there.

8 Les hommes de Juda attaquèrent Jérusalem et s’en emparèrent. Ils massacrèrent ses habitants et mirent le feu à la ville.

8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it. They slaughtered the inhabitants and set fire to the city.

9 Ensuite, ils partirent combattre les Cananéens qui occupaient la région montagneuse, le Néguev et le Bas-Pays.

9 Then they went to fight the Canaanites who were in the hill country, the Negev and the lowlands.

10 Juda marcha aussi contre les Cananéens qui habitaient Hébron, dont le nom était autrefois Qiryath-Arba. Ils battirent Shéshaï, Ahimân et Talmaï.

10 Judah also went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron, whose name used to be Qiryath-arba. They defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.

11 De là, ils partirent attaquer les habitants de Debir, appelée autrefois Qiryath-Sépher.

11 From there they went to attack the inhabitants of Debir, which used to be called Kiriath-sepher.

12 Caleb promit sa fille Aksa en mariage à celui qui battrait et prendrait Qiryath-Sépher.

12 Caleb promised his daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who defeated and took Kiriath-sepher.

13 Ce fut son neveu Otniel, fils de Qenaz, le frère cadet de Caleb, qui s’en empara ; et Caleb lui donna sa fille Aksa en mariage.

13 But his nephew Otniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.

14 Dès son arrivée auprès de son mari, elle l’engagea à demander un champ à son père Caleb. Puis elle sauta de son âne et Caleb lui demanda : Quel est ton désir ?

14 As soon as she came to her husband, she got him to ask her father Caleb for a field. Then she jumped off her donkey and Caleb asked her: What is your wish?

15 Elle lui répondit : Accorde-moi un cadeau. Puisque tu m’as établie dans une terre aride, donne-moi aussi des points d’eau.

15 She replied, "Give me a gift. Since you have put me in a dry land, give me water as well.

Et Caleb lui donna les sources supérieures et les sources inférieures.

So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16 Les descendants du Qénien, beau-père de Moïse, quittèrent la ville des palmiers avec les hommes de Juda pour aller s’installer parmi le peuple dans les territoires désertiques de Juda qui se situent au sud d’Arad.

16 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, left the city of palm trees with the men of Judah to go and live among the people in the desert lands of Judah south of Arad.

17 Les hommes de Juda se joignirent à ceux de Siméon, frère de Juda, pour battre les Cananéens qui habitaient Tsephath, ils en exterminèrent la population et détruisirent entièrement la ville, pour la vouer à l’Eternel, et on lui donna le nom de Horma.

17 The men of Judah joined with the men of Simeon, Judah's brother, to fight against the Canaanites who were living in Zephath; they wiped out all the people and completely destroyed the town, dedicating it to the Lord; and it was named Hormah.

18 Les gens de Juda s’emparèrent également de Gaza, d’Ashkelôn et d’Eqrôn ainsi que des territoires voisins de ces villes.

18 The men of Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron and the land round them.

19 L’Eternel lui-même était avec eux, et c’est ainsi que les hommes de Juda purent conquérir la région montagneuse. Ils ne réussirent pas à déposséder les habitants de la vallée, car ceux-ci disposaient de chars de combat bardés de fer.

19 The Lord himself was with them, so the men of Judah were able to conquer the hill country. They did not succeed in dispossessing the people of the valley, because they had chariots with iron armour.

20 On attribua Hébron à Caleb, comme Moïse l’avait dit. Il en expulsa les trois descendants d’Anaq.

20 Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. He expelled the three descendants of Anak.

21 Les descendants de Benjamin ne dépossédèrent pas les Yebousiens qui habitaient Jérusalem ; ceux-ci y vivent encore aujourd’hui avec les Benjaminites.

21 The descendants of Benjamin did not dispossess the Yebusites who lived in Jerusalem; they still live there today with the Benjaminites.

22 Les descendants de Joseph partirent de leur côté attaquer Béthel et l’Eternel fut avec eux.

22 The children of Joseph went to attack Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

23 Ils envoyèrent d’abord des hommes en reconnaissance à Béthel qui s’appelait autrefois Louz.

23 At first they sent men to make a search for Bethel, which used to be called Louz.

24 Les envoyés virent un homme sortir de la ville et ils lui dirent : Montre-nous par où on peut pénétrer dans la ville, et nous te traiterons avec bonté.

24 When they saw a man coming out of the town, they said to him, Show us the way into the town, and we will be kind to you.

25 L’homme leur montra donc comment pénétrer dans la ville. Ils massacrèrent tous les habitants, mais laissèrent partir cet homme avec toute sa famille.

25 So the man showed them how to get into the town. They slaughtered all the inhabitants, but let the man go with all his family.

26 L’homme émigra dans le pays des Hittites ; il y construisit une ville à laquelle il donna le nom de Louz qu’elle porte encore aujourd’hui.

26 The man emigrated to the land of the Hittites, where he built a town and called it Luz, as it is called to this day.

27 Les hommes de Manassé ne dépossédèrent pas les habitants de Beth-Sheân, de Taanak, de Dor, de Yibleam, de Meguiddo et des localités qui dépendaient de ces villes. Les Cananéens continuèrent donc à se maintenir dans cette région.

27 But the men of Manasseh did not dispossess the people of Beth-shean, Taanach, Dor, Yibleam, Megiddo and the places which belonged to them. So the Canaanites continued to live there.

28 Lorsque les Israélites furent devenus plus forts, ils leur imposèrent des corvées, mais ils ne les dépossédèrent pas.

28 When the Israelites became stronger, they forced them to work, but they did not dispossess them.

29 Les gens d’Ephraïm ne dépossédèrent pas les Cananéens établis à Guézer, et ceux-ci continuèrent à y vivre au milieu des Ephraïmites.

29 The people of Ephraim did not dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer, so they continued to live there among the Ephraimites.

30 Ceux de Zabulon ne dépossédèrent pas non plus les habitants de Qitrôn et de Nahalol ; les Cananéens habitèrent donc au milieu des gens de Zabulon qui leur imposèrent des corvées.

30 Neither did the men of Zebulun dispossess the people of Izron and Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among the men of Zebulun, who made them do their work.

31 Les gens d’Aser ne dépossédèrent pas les habitants d’Akko, de Sidon, d’Ahlab, d’Akzib, de Helba, d’Aphiq et de Rehob.

31 The people of Asher did not take away the property of the people of Akko, Sidon, Ahlab, Akzib, Helba, Aphiq and Rehob.

32 Les descendants d’Aser s’établirent donc au milieu des Cananéens qui occupaient le pays, car ils ne les dépossédèrent pas.

32 So the descendants of Asher took up their abode among the Canaanites who were living in the land, for they did not dispossess them.

33 Les gens de Nephtali ne dépossédèrent pas les habitants de Beth-Shémesh ni ceux de Beth-Anath. Ils s’installèrent au milieu des Cananéens qui habitaient le pays et ils soumirent à des corvées les habitants de ces deux villes.

33 The people of Naphtali did not dispossess the people of Beth-shemesh or Beth-anath. They settled among the Canaanites who lived in the land, and they made the inhabitants of those two towns do forced labour.

34 Les Amoréens refoulèrent les Danites dans la région montagneuse et les empêchèrent de descendre dans la vallée.

34 The Amorites drove the Danites back into the hill country and prevented them from going down into the valley.

35 Les Amoréens continuèrent donc à se maintenir à Har-Hérès, à Ayalôn et à Shaalbim, mais les descendants de Joseph furent de plus en plus puissants et leur imposèrent des corvées.

35 So the Amorites continued to hold out in Har-heres, Ayalon and Shaalbim, but Joseph's descendants became more and more powerful and forced them to do hard labour.

36 Le territoire des Amoréens s’étendait de la montée des Scorpions, depuis Séla et en remontant.

36 The territory of the Amorites extended from the ascent of the Scorpions, from Selah and upwards.

2:1 L’ange de l’Eternel monta de Guilgal à Bokim et déclara au peuple d’Israël : Je vous ai fait sortir d’Egypte et je vous ai amenés dans le pays que j’ai solennellement promis à vos ancêtres. J’ai déclaré que je ne romprais jamais mon alliance avec vous.

2:1 The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said to the people of Israel: I brought you out of Egypt and brought you into the land which I solemnly promised your ancestors. I declared that I would never break my covenant with you.

2 Et vous de même, vous ne conclurez pas d’alliance avec les habitants de ce pays et vous démolirez leurs autels. Or, vous ne m’avez pas obéi. Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela ?

2 In the same way, you are not to make an agreement with the inhabitants of that land, and you are to pull down their altars. But you did not obey me. Why have you done this?

3 Aussi ai-je résolu de ne pas déposséder les habitants du pays en votre faveur. Ils resteront pour vous des adversaires et leurs dieux seront un piège pour vous.

3 So I have decided not to dispossess the inhabitants of the land in your favour. They will remain your adversaries and their gods will be a snare for you.

4 Lorsque l’ange de l’Eternel eut adressé ces paroles au peuple d’Israël, tous se mirent à se lamenter et à pleurer.

4 When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to the people of Israel, they all began to mourn and weep.

5 Ils appelèrent l’endroit Bokim (Les pleureurs) et ils offrirent des sacrifices à l’Eternel.

5 They called the place Bokim (The Weepers) and offered sacrifices to the Lord.

6 Après que Josué eut congédié le peuple, les Israélites se rendirent chacun dans son patrimoine pour prendre possession du pays.

6 After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land.

7 Ils servirent l’Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué et, après sa mort, tant que vécurent les responsables qui avaient vu toute l’œuvre de l’Eternel en faveur d’Israël.

7 They served the Lord all the days of Joshua's life, and after his death, as long as the people in charge, who had seen all the Lord's work for Israel, lived.

8 Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de l’Eternel, mourut à l’âge de 110 ans.

8 Joshua, the son of Nun, a servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110.

9 On l’enterra dans le domaine qu’il avait reçu pour propriété à Timnath-Hérès, dans la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaash.

9 He was buried in the land which he had taken for his heritage in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

10 Tous ceux de sa génération disparurent à leur tour. Une nouvelle génération se leva, qui ne connaissait pas l’Eternel, et n’avait pas vu les œuvres qu’il avait accomplies en faveur d’Israël.

10 All those of his generation died out. A new generation arose who had no knowledge of the Lord and had not seen the works he had done for Israel.

11 Alors les Israélites firent ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal, et ils se mirent à rendre un culte aux dieux Baals.

11 So the Israelites did what the Lord considered evil, and began to worship the Baalim gods.

12 Ils abandonnèrent l’Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres qui les avait fait sortir d’Egypte, et se rallièrent à d’autres dieux, à ceux des peuples qui vivaient autour d’eux. Ils se prosternèrent devant ces dieux et irritèrent l’Eternel.

12 They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt, and joined other gods, the gods of the peoples living around them. They worshipped these gods and angered the Lord.

13 Ainsi, ils abandonnèrent l’Eternel pour rendre un culte aux Baals et aux Astartés.

13 So they gave up the Lord and worshipped the Baals and the Asherim.

14 Alors l’Eternel se mit en colère contre les Israélites et il les abandonna aux violences de pillards qui les dépouillèrent ; il les livra au pouvoir de leurs ennemis d’alentour, de sorte qu’ils ne furent plus capables de leur résister.

14 Then the Lord was angry with the Israelites and gave them up to the violence of the robbers who took their goods; he gave them over to the power of their enemies round about, so that they were no longer able to resist them.

15 Chaque fois qu’ils entreprenaient une campagne, l’Eternel intervenait contre eux pour leur malheur, comme il le leur avait déclaré, et même annoncé par serment. Ainsi ils furent réduits à la plus grande détresse.

15 Every time they went on a warpath, the Lord took action against them to their destruction, as he had said he would, and had given them his oath. So they were in great trouble.

16 Alors l’Eternel leur suscita des chefs qui les délivrèrent des pillards.

16 Then the Lord gave them leaders who helped them to get rid of the robbers.

17 Mais les Israélites n’obéirent pas non plus à ces chefs, ils se prostituaient avec d’autres dieux et se prosternaient devant eux. Ils s’écartèrent très vite du chemin qu’avaient suivi leurs ancêtres qui obéissaient aux commandements de l’Eternel ; ils ne suivirent pas leur exemple.

17 But the Israelites did not obey these leaders either; they played the harlot with other gods and worshipped them. They soon strayed from the path followed by their ancestors who obeyed the Lord's commandments; they did not follow their example.

18 Chaque fois que l’Eternel leur suscitait un chef, il aidait cet homme, et il délivrait les Israélites de leurs ennemis pendant toute la vie de ce chef. En effet, lorsque l’Eternel entendait son peuple gémir sous le joug de ses oppresseurs et de ceux qui le maltraitaient, il avait pitié d’eux.

18 Whenever the Lord raised up a leader for them, he helped that man, and he delivered the Israelites from their enemies throughout the life of that leader. For when the Lord heard his people groaning under the yoke of their oppressors and abusers, he had pity on them.

19 Mais après la mort du chef, le peuple recommençait à se corrompre encore plus que les générations précédentes, en se ralliant à d’autres dieux pour leur rendre un culte et se prosterner devant eux ; ils refusaient d’abandonner leurs pratiques et s’obstinaient dans leur conduite.

19 But after the death of the ruler, the people became even more corrupt than in previous generations, turning to other gods and worshipping them; they refused to give up their ways and were stubborn in their behaviour.

20 L’Eternel se mit donc en colère contre Israël et déclara : Puisque ce peuple a violé l’alliance que j’avais conclue avec leurs ancêtres et qu’il ne m’écoute pas,

20 So the Lord was angry with Israel and said, "Because this people has broken the agreement I made with their ancestors and will not listen to me, I will not take away their land from now on,

21 désormais, je ne déposséderai plus devant eux un seul des peuples qui subsistaient dans le pays à la mort de Josué.

21 From now on I will not dispossess any of the people who were still living in the land when Joshua died.

22 Je me servirai d’eux pour éprouver les Israélites pour voir si oui ou non ils suivent la voie que je leur ai prescrite et m’obéissent comme l’ont fait leurs ancêtres.

22 I will use them to put the Israelites to the test, to see whether or not they will follow the way I have given them and do as their ancestors did.

23 L’Eternel laissa donc subsister, sans se presser de les déposséder, ces peuples qu’il n’avait pas livrés au pouvoir de Josué.

23 So the Lord let those peoples remain whom he had not given over to Joshua, without hurrying to dispossess them.

3:1 Voici quels peuples l’Eternel laissa subsister pour mettre à l’épreuve les Israélites qui n’avaient pas participé aux guerres pour la conquête de Canaan.

3:1 These are the peoples the Lord left to test the Israelites who had not taken part in the wars to conquer Canaan.

2 Il voulait que les nouvelles générations d’Israélites, qui n’avaient pas connu la guerre, apprennent ce qu’est la guerre.

2 He wanted the new generations of Israelites, who had not experienced war, to learn what war is like.

3 L’Eternel laissa donc dans le pays les cinq principautés philistines, tous les Cananéens et les Sidoniens, les Héviens qui habitaient la chaîne du Liban depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à Lebo-Hamath.

3 So the Lord left in the land the five Philistine principalities, all the Canaanites and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanon range from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.

4 Ces peuples servirent à éprouver les Israélites pour savoir s’ils obéiraient aux commandements que l’Eternel avait donnés à leurs ancêtres par Moïse.

4 These people were used as a test for the Israelites, to see if they would keep the orders which the Lord had given their ancestors through Moses.

5 Ainsi les Israélites habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Hittites, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Héviens et des Yebousiens.

5 So the Israelites lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.

6 Ils épousèrent leurs filles, donnèrent leurs propres filles à leurs fils et adorèrent leurs dieux.

6 They married their daughters, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshipped their gods.

7 Les Israélites firent ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal : ils oublièrent l’Eternel leur Dieu et rendirent un culte aux dieux Baals et Ashéras.

7 The Israelites did what the Lord considers evil: they forgot the Lord their God and worshipped the gods Baalim and Asherah.

8 L’Eternel se mit en colère contre Israël et il les livra au pouvoir de Koushân-Risheatayim, roi de Mésopotamie. Les Israélites lui furent assujettis pendant huit ans.

8 The Lord was angry with Israel and gave them over to the power of Kushan-Risheatayim, king of Mesopotamia. The Israelites were under his rule for eight years.

9 Ils implorèrent l’Eternel et celui-ci leur suscita un libérateur en la personne d’Otniel, fils de Qenaz, qui était le frère cadet de Caleb. Et Otniel les délivra.

9 Then they prayed to the Lord, and he raised up a deliverer for them in the person of Otniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. And Otniel delivered them.

10 L’Esprit de l’Eternel vint sur lui et il prit la direction d’Israël. Il partit en guerre contre Koushân-Risheatayim, roi de Mésopotamie, et l’Eternel lui donna la victoire sur lui.

10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he became ruler of Israel. He went to war against Kushan-Risheatayim, king of Mesopotamia, and the Lord gave him victory over him.

11 Après cela, la région fut en paix pendant quarante ans ; puis Otniel, fils de Qenaz, mourut.

11 After that, the region was at peace for forty years; then Otniel, the son of Kenaz, died.

12 Les Israélites recommencèrent à faire ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal. A cause de cela, l’Eternel fortifia Eglôn, roi de Moab, et le dressa contre Israël.

12 The Israelites began again to do what the Lord considered evil. Because of this, the Lord strengthened Eglon, king of Moab, and set him against Israel.

13 Eglôn s’allia aux Ammonites et aux Amalécites, et ils attaquèrent les Israélites, les battirent et s’emparèrent de la ville des palmiers.

13 Eglon joined forces with the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and they attacked the Israelites, defeating them and taking the town of palm trees.

14 Pendant dix-huit ans, les Israélites furent assujettis à Eglôn, roi de Moab.

14 The Israelites were under Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years.

15 Alors ils implorèrent l’Eternel, et celui-ci leur suscita un libérateur en la personne d’Ehoud, fils de Guéra, de la tribu de Benjamin, un homme qui était gaucher. Les Israélites le chargèrent de porter le tribut à Eglôn, roi de Moab.

15 Then they made prayer to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer in the form of Ehud, the son of Gera, of the tribe of Benjamin, a man who was left-handed. The Israelites sent him to bring tribute to Eglon, king of Moab.

16 Ehoud se fabriqua une épée à deux tranchants d’environ cinquante centimètres de long et il la ceignit sous ses vêtements, le long de la cuisse droite.

16 Ehud made himself a two-edged sword, about fifty centimetres long, and girded it round his right thigh under his clothes.

17 Il alla remettre le tribut à Eglôn, roi de Moab qui était très gros.

17 He went and gave tribute to Eglon, king of Moab, who was very fat.

18 Lorsqu’il eut fini de présenter le tribut, il renvoya les hommes qui l’avaient apporté.

18 When he had finished giving the tribute, he sent the men who had brought it away.

19 Arrivé aux idoles de pierre à côté de Guilgal, il revint sur ses pas et dit au roi : Majesté, j’ai un message secret à te communiquer. Le roi ordonna à tous ceux qui se tenaient autour de lui de le laisser, et tous ses familiers se retirèrent.

19 When he came to the stone idols near Gilgal, he went back and said to the king, "Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you. The king ordered all those who were with him to leave him, and all his friends went away.

20 Alors Ehoud s’approcha du roi qui était assis dans la chambre haute qu’il s’était réservée sur la terrasse, au frais. Ehoud lui dit : J’ai pour toi un message de Dieu. Le roi se leva de son siège.

20 Then Ehud came to the king, who was sitting in the upper room he had made for himself on the terrace, in the cool of the air. Ehud said to him, "I have a message for you from God. The king got up from his seat.

21 De sa main gauche, Ehoud saisit l’épée qu’il portait sur sa cuisse droite et l’enfonça dans le ventre du roi.

21 With his left hand Ehud took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into the king's stomach.

22 La poignée elle-même pénétra après la lame, et la graisse se referma sur la lame, car Ehoud laissa l’arme dans le ventre du roi,

22 The handle itself went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for Ehud left the weapon in the king's body,

23 puis il sortit par le vestibule, après avoir fermé les portes de la chambre haute à clé derrière lui.

23 Then he went out through the doorway, having locked the doors of the upper room behind him.

24 Quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi revinrent et ils constatèrent que les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées à clé. Ils attendirent, se disant que le roi était en train de faire ses besoins dans la chambre d’été.

24 When he had gone out, the king's servants came back and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They waited, thinking that the king was relieving himself in the summer room.

25 Ils attendirent un bon moment. Enfin, ne sachant plus que penser, et comme il n’ouvrait toujours pas les portes, ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent eux-mêmes et voici que leur maître était étendu à terre, mort.

25 They waited for a long time. At last, not knowing what to think, and when he still did not open the doors, they took the key and opened them themselves, and there was their master lying dead on the floor.

27 As soon as he got there, he blew the horn in the mountains of Ephraim. The Israelites came down from the hills, and he led them.

28 Suivez-moi, leur dit-il, car l’Eternel vous donne la victoire sur vos ennemis les Moabites.

28 He said to them, "Follow me, for the Lord has given you victory over your enemies the Moabites.

Ils le suivirent donc et ils occupèrent les gués du Jourdain pour couper le passage aux Moabites, ne laissant personne traverser la rivière.

29 Ils tuèrent ce jour-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous robustes et aguerris et ils ne laissèrent aucun rescapé.

29 They killed about ten thousand of Moab's men that day, all of them strong and hardy, and left no one alive.

30 Moab fut affaibli à partir de là par les Israélites et la région connut la paix pendant quatre-vingts ans.

30 From then on Moab was weakened by the Israelites, and the region was at peace for eighty years.
