Physical abuse
Any treatment that causes harm to a person's body, including slapping, bruising, cutting, burning, physically restraining, pushing, shoving, or rough handling.
Psychological abuse
Emotional harm caused by threatening, scaring, humiliating, intimidating, isolating, or insulting a person.
Verbal abuse
The use of spoken or written words, pictures, or gestures that threaten, embarrass, or insult a person.
Sexual abuse
Nonconsensual sexual contact of any type.
Financial abuse
The improper or illegal use of a person's money, possessions, property, or other assets.
Assault
A threat to harm a person, resulting in fear of harm; for example, threatening to slap a resident if they do not stop yelling.
Battery
The intentional touching of a person without their consent, such as hitting or pushing a resident.
Domestic violence
Abuse by spouses, intimate partners, or family members, which can be physical, sexual, or emotional.
False imprisonment
Unlawful restraint affecting a person's freedom of movement, such as not allowing a resident to leave the facility.
Involuntary seclusion
The separation of a person from others against their will, like confining a resident to their room.
Workplace violence
Abuse of staff by staff members, residents, or visitors, which can be verbal, physical, or sexual.
Sexual harassment
Unwelcome sexual advance or behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.
Substance abuse
Repeated use of legal or illegal drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol in a way that harms oneself or others.
Neglect
Failure to provide needed care resulting in physical, mental, or emotional harm, such as leaving a bedridden resident alone.
Negligence
Actions or failure to act that result in unintended injury, such as forgetting to lock a resident's wheelchair.
Malpractice
Injury resulting from professional misconduct through negligence, carelessness, or lack of skill.
