Moment
The turning effect of a force.
Torque
Another term for the turning effect of a force.
Lever
A rigid bar resting on a pivot or fulcrum, used to move a load when a force is applied.
Moment of a force (M)
The product of the force (F) and the perpendicular distance (d) from the pivot to the line of action of the force. M = Fd
Principle of Moments
When a body is in equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments about a pivot is equal to the sum of anticlockwise moments about the same pivot.
Equilibrium
A state where an object is stationary and has no rotational or translational motion.
Conditions for Equilibrium
The resultant moment on the body is zero, and the resultant force on the body is also zero.
Centre of Gravity
An imaginary point where the entire weight of the object seems to act.
