Circulatory System Purpose?
Transport oxygen, nutrients, other substances and remove waste from tissue
Septum
A wall in the heart that separates the right side from the left side
Prevents oxygen-poor and oxygen rich blood from mixing
artium/atria
Upper Chamber
Receive blood from the body
ventricle
Lower chamber
Pumps blood out of the heart
Aorta
Carries oxygen rich blood from left ventricle to body
Superior Vena Cava
Brings oxygen-poor blood from the upper body to the right atrium
Pulmonary Veins
bring oxygen rich blood from both lungs to left atrium
Right atrium
Accepts oxygen poor blood from the body
Left atrium
Accepts oxygen rich blood from the lungs
Inferior Vena cava
bring oxygen poor blood from the lower body to right atrium
Right Ventricle
Accepts oxygen poor blood to the lungs
Left ventricle
Pumps oxygen rich blood to body
Heart functions as two pumps therfore…
one pump pushed blood to lungs while the other pump pushes blood to rest of body
Pulmonary circulation
Carries blood between the heart to the lungs
Systemic circulation
carries blood between the heart and lungs
Right side of heart
Pumps deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
In the lungs carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood and oxygen absorbed back into blood into left side of heart
Left side of heart
pumps oxygenated blood to rest of body
Cells absorb the oxygen that they need to load the blood with carbon dioxide
Blood leaves through aorta through blood vessels
Three types of blood vessels
Arteries, capillaries, and veins
Arteries
Large vessels that carry blood from the heart to tissues of body
All arteries besides pulmonary arteries carry oxygenated blood.
Have thick elastic wall to help aid powerful pressure of heart
Capillaries
smallest blood vessels and narrow that blood cells pass through them
Thin wall allows oxygen and nutrients to diffuse from blood into tissues
Allows carbon dioxide and other waste to move from tissues into blood
Veins
after blood pass through capillaries, returns to heart through veins
Located near and between skeletal muscle
Contain valves which ensure blood flower in one direction to heart
