Chemical name
The scientific name given to a chemical in accordance with the nomenclature system developed by IUPAC.
Structural formula
A graphical representation of the molecular structure showing how the atoms are arranged in space.
Chemical Formula
A symbolic representation of the atoms in a compound and the ratio of those atoms.
Ionic compound
A compound formed between a metal and a nonmetal with ionic bonds due to ionic charges.
Covalent compound
A compound formed between two or more nonmetal atoms with covalent bonds.
Ionic bond
A bond formed by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Covalent bond
A bond formed by sharing electron pairs between atoms.
Criss-cross method
A method to determine the chemical formula of an ionic compound by crossing the charges of the ions.
Sodium chloride (NaCl)
An ionic compound formed from sodium ions (Na+) and chloride ions (Cl−); common table salt.
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)
A covalent compound with one carbon atom and four chlorine atoms.
Greek prefixes (mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hex(a), hepta, octa, nona, deca)
Prefixes used to indicate the number of atoms in covalent compounds.
Mono prefix rule
In binary covalent compounds, the prefix 'mono' is not used for the first element.
IUPAC nomenclature
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry system for naming chemical compounds.
