Vowels
Produced with unobstructed vocal tract.
Consonants
Result from some degree of airflow constricted at some point in the vocal tract.
Place of Articulation
Location in the mouth where constriction occurs during the production of sounds.
Manner of Articulation
How the sound is produced, including various categories such as stops, fricatives, and affricates.
Voicing
Refers to whether vocal fold vibrations occur during the production of speech sounds.
Sonorants
Sounds with a relatively open oral or nasal cavity, including liquids, nasals, and glides.
Obstruents
Sounds produced with a complete or partial obstruction of airflow.
Cognate Pairs
Sounds that differ only by voicing, such as /p/ and /b/.
Nasal Cavity
The space behind the nose that is involved in the production of nasal sounds.
Metaphonological Awareness
Consciousness of speech sounds by analyzing, explaining, or transcribing them.
Phonetic Transcription
A written representation of speech sounds that uses symbols to depict pronunciation.
Glottal Phoneme
Sounds produced by narrowing the glottis, such as /h/.
Stridents
Sounds produced with directed airflow against a surface, primarily certain fricatives and affricates.
Sibilants
A subset of stridents referred to as hissing sounds.
