Overfishing:
leds to extreme scarcity of some fish species -- lessens biodiversity in aquatic systems + harm people who depend on fishing for food/commerce
radar + sonar
system that uses electromagnetic waves to detect objects, determine their distance, speed, direction -- high speed detection, real time data, very slow, limited range
Longlines
long lines of hooks with bait that stretch far to catch fish -- efficient, lower environmental impact, high selectivity, high bycatch, kills/threats marine species,
Trawling
dragging large net along ocean floor -- high efficiency, low cost, high bycatch, destroys biodiversity, habitat destruction
Drift Nets:
nets hung in water to catch fish -- high efficiency, low cost, minimal habitat destruction, nets left behind (ghostnetting), constantly catching fish forever
Aquaculture (5.16):
farming of aquatic organisms in controlled marine or freshwater environments
Pros: highly efficient, require small areas on water, little fuel
Cons: contaminate wastewater, fish that escape may breed/compete with wild fish, density of fish can lead to increase in diseases → transmitted to wild fish
