Sons of Liberty
A group that protested against British taxation through violence and boycotts.
Daughters of Liberty
Women who supported the boycott of British goods by producing homemade cloth.
Second Continental Congress
Met in response to the Battles of Lexington and Concord; led to the creation of the Articles of Confederation.
Battle of Saratoga
Significant battle that convinced France to send troops to aid the American Revolution.
Articles of Confederation
The first constitution of the United States; it was eventually replaced due to its ineffectiveness.
Land Ordinance of 1785
Process of dividing up land into squares to be sold, some reserved for schools.
Three-Fifths Compromise
Counting slaves as three-fifths of a person for representation in Congress.
Anti-Federalists
Group that opposed the ratification of the Constitution, favoring state power.
Federalist Papers
Essays written to support the ratification of the Constitution, especially in New York.
Bill of Rights
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution, added to appease Anti-Federalist concerns.
Whiskey Rebellion
A rebellion by farmers in Pennsylvania against the tax on whiskey.
Monroe Doctrine
A policy declaring that the Americas were off-limits to future colonization by European powers.
Era of Good Feelings
A period of national unity and a single-party state under Monroe's presidency.
Missouri Compromise
A legislative agreement that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, with a divide at 36°30′ latitude.
Nullification
The right of a state to nullify, or invalidate, any federal law it deemed unconstitutional, highlighted by the South Carolina incident.
Market Revolution
A period of growth in the American economy characterized by the rise of factories and improved transportation systems.
Jacksonian Democracy
A political movement that promoted greater democracy for the common man, leading to increased voter participation among white males.
Indian Removal Act
A federal law that authorized the removal of Native American tribes from their ancestral lands.
Marbury v. Madison
A landmark Supreme Court case that established the principle of judicial review.
Elastic Clause
Allows Congress to pass laws necessary to carry out its enumerated powers, leading to implied powers.
