AP Lang Midterm Review
Multiple Choice
Take multiple passes through the test, do the easy ones first
LOOK at the question FIRST, THEN read the passage
When a question is really hard, figure out why each question is wrong/more detailed process of elimination
Just because part of the answer is right, it doesn’t mean the whole answer is right
Trust your gut, your first guess is the right guess (statistically speaking)
When looking at answer options, look at the first word of each choice (explains, contradicts, describes, ect)
If an answer says always or never it’s probably wrong
Ask yourself - where are the wrongs in the answer (instead of where are the rights?)
right + wrong = wrong (NOT right)
Right + right + right
Wrong + wrong = wrong
LOOK FOR THE WRONG PARTS INSTEAD OF THE RIGHT (so much easier)
Rhetorical Analysis Essay
2 most important things: audience and purpose
Why is the rhetorical device here? How does this support the purpose? How does it relate/correspond with the audience?
Closed thesis will keep you on track
Body paragraphs will be more effective with multiple examples/evidence
It’s okay to only have 2 devices, just make sure to use plenty of examples
Why is the author making this point
ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE DATE AND CONTEXT!!!
If you’re blessed enough to have prior knowledge on the topic, use it
In conclusion think about rhetorical situation (purpose, audience, topic, writer, context) can approach with counterclaim
