CPE (Customer Premises Equipment)
Any termination and routing equipment (like the SOHO router) placed at the customer site to connect to the ISP.
Local Loop
The cabling that runs from the customer premises (CPE) to the local exchange (telco office).
Demarcation Point (Demarc)
The physical point at which the telecommunications company's cabling enters the customer premises.
IXP (Internet eXchange Point)
Datacenters containing high-bandwidth trunks where ISPs establish links (using transit and peering) to exchange traffic.
IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)
Manages the allocation of IP addresses and maintenance of the top-level domain space; currently run by ICANN.
IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)
Focuses on developing solutions and standards for the Internet, published as Requests for Comments (RFCs).
RFC (Request for Comments) Publication Rule
An older RFC is never updated; if changes are required, a new RFC is published with a new number.
Internet Model (Layers 1 & 2)
Link layer (combines OSI layers 1 and 2).

Internet layer (equivalent to OSI Layer 3).
