explain the difference between mass and weight?
mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force gravity exerts on an object
intensive difference vs. extensive difference and some examples
intensive difference is the difference in telling apart chemicals that only depends on what chemical it is and not its quantity amount (ex: temperature, boiling point, concentration) and extensive differences are differences in amount of the chemical (ex: weight, length, volume)
what are normal conditions of temperature and pressure?
25ºC and 1atm
law of conservation of matter
matter can’t be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another
what is scale? and why is it used?
the distance of matter in real life and its used to observe very small or large numbers (scientific notation)
what is mass spectrometry?
a method used to analyze and identify the chemical composition of a substance by separating gaseous ions by mass and charge; used to find natural abundances of isotopes
what are group 15 and 16 called on the periodic table?
pnictogens and chalcogens
common diatomic elements?
Br2, I2, N2, Cl2, H2, O2, F2 #can remember it by Brinclhof
empirical formula vs. molecular formula
empirical formula shows the simplest whole number ratio of atoms in a compound, while the molecular formula shows the actual composition of each atom
what is formula mass/molecular mass?
the sum of all the average atomic masses of each atom in a chemical formula
