Pentateuch
The first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Former Prophets
The historical books of the Old Testament: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings.
Scripture
Inspired texts, where the Old Testament is viewed as divinely inspired.
Divine Providence
God's intervention in the world through ordinary means.
Word-Act Revelation
God's redemptive acts interpreted through His word, with God as the interpreter.
Canon
A standard or authority, referring to the authoritative books of the Bible.
Qaneh/Kanon
Hebrew and Greek terms, respectively, originally meaning 'reed' or 'measuring stick.'
LXX
The first translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek.
Aramaic Targums
Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible that provide contemporary meaning of the text.
Syriac Peshitta
A Syriac translation of the Bible that aimed to be close to the Hebrew text.
Vulgate
The Latin translation of the Bible.
Masoretic Text
The traditional Hebrew text of the Old Testament, preserved by Jewish scholars and scribes.
Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical
Books considered second to scripture but still canonical by some.
Pseudepigrapha
A collection of texts that are related to the Bible but of questionable origin.
Fertile Crescent
The region of the ancient Near East known for its fertile land and connection of Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Mesopotamia
Greek for 'between two rivers,' referring to the region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Syro-Palestine
The region located at the northern bend of the Euphrates river, serving as a bridge between civilizations.
Via Maris
The Way of the Sea, an ancient international highway that begins in Egypt and extends into Mesopotamia and Asia.
Kings Highway
An ancient international highway that begins in the Red Sea and connects with the Via Maris in Egypt.
Primeval Era
Genesis 1-11, covering creation, fall, cursing for sin, and the promise of an offspring.
Patriarchal Period
Genesis 12-50, focusing on Abraham and God's covenant with him.
Monarchy and Division of Israel
A period where leadership transitioned from a 12 tribe system to a monarchy which eventually divided.
