Cisgender
An individual whose gender identity corresponds with the sex they were assigned at birth.
Androgens
The class of sex hormones that are predominant in males, such as testosterone.
Estrogens
The class of sex hormones that are predominant in females, such as estradiol.
Gender Schema Theory
A cognitive-evolutionary approach suggesting that gender typing emerges as children develop mental frameworks of their culture's gender-appropriate behaviors.
Overt Aggression
Physical or verbal behavior that directly harms another person, often contrasted with relational aggression.
Sexual Selection
An evolutionary mechanism in which certain traits are favored because they increase an individual's success in attracting mates.

Broad and oversimplified generalizations about the traits, behaviors, and roles typically associated with men and women.

Socially learned patterns and stereotyped sequences of events that individuals use to guide their sexual behavior and expectations.
