Element
A pure substance made of one kind of atom.
An element cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical or physical means.
Found on the Periodic Table.

Pure substance
A material in which all of the basic particles are identical. Only one type of element or compound is present.

Compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined (or bonded).

Mixture
Two or more substances that are mixed but not chemically combined.

Atom
The basic unit of matter

Molecule
Two or more atoms covalently bonded together.
The smallest unit that keeps the same properties.
e.g. a water molecule H2O
