Waves
are formed when the winds scrape across the ocean surface. The stronger the wind blows the bigger the wave becomes
Tsunami
An underwater landslide, a volcanic eruption or an earthquake can shift large amounts of ocean water as a result a huge tidal wave is formed that may be as high as 15m.
Tsunami of 2004
It occured in Andman and Nicobar islands and caused widespread damage and due to the tsunami the Indira Point in Andaman and Nicobar Islands even got submerged. At that time the magnituge of the earthquake measured by the richter scale was 9.0. The speed of the tidal wave was 700- 900 km per hour
Tides
the rhythmic rise and fall of ocean water twice in a day
Neap tide
when the full and new moon days occur, when the sun, moon and earth are in the same line, it causes high tides
Spring Tide
it occurs when the moon is in its first and last quarter. the ocean water gets pulled in diagonally opposite directions, by the gravitational pull of the sun and the earth causing low tides.
Benefits of High Tides
High tides help the ships arrive at the harbour more easily,, it even help in fishing as when there are high tides the fishes come cloer to the shore helping the fishermen get a plentiful catch. The rise and fall of water also helps in generating electricity in some areas
Ocean Currents
the streams of water flowing constantly on the ocean surface in definite directionss. They may be hot or cold. Generally the warm currents originate at the equator and move towards the poles. The cold currents carry water from polar or high altitudes to tropical or lower latitudes
