Energy level
A region in space around the nucleus of an atom where an electron is likely to be moving.
Quantum
Amount of energy required to move an electron from one energy level to another.
Photon
A particle of light.
E = hv
The equation representing the relationship between energy (E), frequency (v), and Planck's constant (h).
C = λv
The equation relating the speed of light (C), wavelength (λ), and frequency (v).
Ground state
The lowest possible energy level of an atom.
Excited state
When an electron has gained energy and is in a higher energy level.
Light emission
Occurs when atoms absorb or emit light with energy equal to the energy difference between energy levels.
Bohr model
A model of the atom in which the speed and position of an electron can be determined.
Quantum Mechanical Model
A model of the atom where the speed and location of an electron can never be known.
First energy level (Bohr model)
Can hold a maximum of TWO electrons.
Next energy levels (Bohr model)
Can hold a maximum of EIGHT electrons.
