What is a natural hazard?
It is an event that has the potential to hurt someone
What is a climatic hazard?
A hazard caused by the weather.
What is a tectonic hazard?
A natural hazard caused by movement of tectonic plates
What is hazard risk?
The probability that a natural hazard occurs.
Why are some areas are more susceptible to hazards than others?
Because it is a LIC or the country is densely populatedd
How do tectonic plates move?
Magma is heated which causes it to rise and as it reaches the crust is cools and flows back down. This is called convection currents. The convection currents are pulling the plates apart which could cause earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
What are the two different plates?
Continental:
- thick
- older
- made from granite
Oceanic:
- thinner
- younger
- made from basalt
What is a constructive plate margin?
When two plates move away from each other
e.g iceland
What is a destructive plate margin?
Where two plates move towards one another and as the plates collide, the oceanic plate is forced beneath the continental plate
e.g Eurasion and pacific
What is a conservative plate margin
When two plates are moving past each other at different speeds or different directions. There is friction between the two plates which causes earthquakes.
e.g San adreas fault
What is an example of a primary effect of a tectonic hazard?
buildings collapsing following an earthquake
What is an example of a secondary effect of a tectonic hazard?
after a earthquake a tsunami could happen
What is an immediate response to a tectonic hazard?
search and rescue
What is an long term response to a tectonic hazard?
Rebuilding
What were the effects and responses to the Christchurch, New Zealand 2011 earthquake?
For primary effects buildings collapsed and secondary effects were contaminated beaches and waterways.
For first responses there was temporary housing and long term effects they rebuilt roads.
What were the effects and responses to the Haiti earthquake 2021?
For primary effects buildings were destroyed and secondary effects A 3 m high tsunami happened
For first responses Charities like the Red Cross sent help. And for long-term responses they rebuilt earthquake proof buildings.
why did the effects and responses to the earthquakes varied because of the contrasting levels of wealth.
In the wealthier countries they invested earlier into warning systems and could invest more money into rebuilding more earthquake proof buildings.
Why do people live in areas that are at risk from a tectonic hazard?
Because the land is more fertile
How can monitoring, prediction, protection and planning can reduce the risks from a tectonic hazard?
You could use scientific equipment to detect warning signs. You could use historical evidence and monitoring to make predictions about when and where a tectonic hazard may happen. Design buildings that will withstand tectonic hazards. Identify and avoiding places most at risk
