what is solvation
when a solvent like water surrounds and interacts with solute moelcules or ions
what charge does oxygen have
partial negative
whqt charge does h have
partial positive
how does water solvate the solutes
polar molecules dissolve because of their charges. whatefver charge is positive will be attracted to the negative part of water and vice versa. this breaks it down and forms hydration shells around the molecules in order toi break them do3wn.
how does water move
from LOW to HIGH concentrated solutions
whats hypotonic
where the cell has a higher concentratio n of solutions in it so the outside env has lower solute concentration
whats hypertonic
when cell haslower solute cocnentration
isotonic
both equal conc.
why does osmosis happen
because water likes to move from solutions with h=lower concnetrations of solutes to higher
is the cell membrane permeable to water
yes
whats plasma membrane
thin flexible and control what goes in n out of the cell, made of phospholipids, semi premeable.
whats cell wall
thick rigid freely permeable gives shaoe but diesnt support and doesnt deny entry to anything
what happens w speccial cases like the thingies that always take in water
thry use contractile vacuole to pump out excess water
