Single Replacement Reaction
A type of chemical reaction where one element replaces another in a compound.
Single Replacement General Formula
A + BC -> AC + B
Types of Single Replacement Reactions
Metals replace other metals or hydrogen, and halogens replace other halogens.
Metal Activity Series
Lists metals in order of decreasing reactivity to predict if single replacement will occur.
Metal Cation Replacement Rule
A more reactive metal will replace a less reactive metal cation in a solution.
Reaction with Acids
Metals above hydrogen in the activity series can replace H+ in acids.
Reaction with Water
Alkali metals and some alkaline earth metals can replace hydrogen in water.
Variable Charge Cations
In single replacement reactions, if a metal can form multiple cations, it forms the lowest possible charged cation in the product.
Halogen Activity Trend
Halogens decrease in activity as you go down the group.
Halogen Replacement Rule
A more reactive halogen will replace a less reactive halogen.
