secretary of state john hay was sent in 1899 to negotiate with the 5 imperial powers that controlled trade in china. Made it an open door policy so anyone could trade in china, but left china without control of its own country

cuba was a spanish colony. in 1895 it was at war with spain because Jose Marti and rebels set up their own government and declared independence

US decides to attack all of spain’s colonies. They also want it for it’s trade routes and as a gateway to the rest of asia. Gets the phillippines and guam. Emilio Aguinaldo leads Filipinos in uprising against the US
