"Good morning everyone.
I'm Nurin, and on behalf of my team,
we are presenting:
SMARTWINDOW
IoT-Based Automated Window and
Environment Control System
Supervisor: Ms. Siti Hawa"
PROBLEM TODAY:
• Many homes still use manual windows
• People forget to close when raining
• Windows left open at night = security risk
• Poor ventilation = uncomfortable home
OUR SOLUTION:
SmartWindow - automatic window that
thinks for itself using sensors
PROBLEM 1: RAIN DAMAGE
• Homeowners forget to close windows
• Rain enters house
• Damages floor, furniture, electronics
• Costly repairs
MANUAL WINDOWS CAN'T PREVENT THIS
PROBLEM 2: SECURITY RISK
• Windows left open at night
• Easy entry for thieves
• Families unaware until morning
• Safety of family and belongings at risk
PROBLEM 3: POOR AIR QUALITY
• No proper ventilation control
• Indoor temperature too hot
• Cooking smoke stays inside
• Bad for health and comfort
Existing smart homes IGNORE windows
OBJECTIVE 1:
Design and develop an IoT-based
automated window control system
Integrate:
• Sensors
• Microcontroller
• User interface
OBJECTIVE 2:
Automate window based on:
• Rain detection
• Time (morning/night)
• Temperature
• Smoke/Air quality
Real-time environmental response
OBJECTIVE 3:
Provide user-friendly interface for:
• Monitoring window status
• Receiving notifications
• Manual control when needed
Mobile or web-based app
AUTOMATION FEATURES:
✓ Rain detected → Window CLOSES
✓ Morning time → Window OPENS
✓ Night time → Window CLOSES
✓ Temperature high → Window OPENS
✓ Smoke detected → Window OPENS + ALERT
USER FEATURES:
✓ Manual control via phone
✓ Real-time dashboard
✓ Notification alerts
✓ Security mode at night
SYSTEM FLOW:

IF MORNING → OPEN
IF NIGHT → CLOSE

HARDWARE (Sensors & Brain):
• Rain sensor
• Temperature sensor
• Smoke/Gas sensor
• Microcontroller (ESP32/Arduino)
• Motor to move window
SOFTWARE (My role as SE):
• Programming logic
• Mobile/Web app
• Database
• Notification system
• Dashboard design
TYPE OF SYSTEM:
IoT smart home prototype
TARGET USERS:
• Homeowners
• Family members
• Admin (configure settings)
TESTING WE'LL DO:
• Functional testing
• Usability testing
• Hardware testing
• Integration testing
• User acceptance testing
THIS IS SOFTWARE ENGINEERING BECAUSE:
• I write the PROGRAMMING LOGIC
• I build the USER INTERFACE
• I create the DATABASE
• I develop NOTIFICATION system
• I design the CONTROL ALGORITHM
Hardware is just the tool -
The BRAIN is software!
SMARTWINDOW PROVIDES:
✓ Convenience - no need to manually open/close
✓ Safety - windows close at night and during rain
✓ Comfort - good ventilation and temperature control
✓ Peace of mind - alerts and remote control
Practical IoT solution for modern homes
"We are SOFTWARE students.
Our focus is on the programming,
logic, and user interface.
For hardware, we will:
• Use available components
• Get guidance from supervisor
• Focus on working prototype
• Demonstrate SOFTWARE capabilities"
"If internet goes down:
• System still works automatically
because sensors connect directly
to microcontroller
• Only REMOTE CONTROL via app
will be affected until connection
is back"
"Our project is UNIQUE because:
• Most smart homes ignore windows
• We combine MULTIPLE sensors
(rain, temp, smoke, time)
• Multi-factor decision making
• Specifically for MALAYSIAN homes
(heavy rain, hot weather)"
"Yes, it's FEASIBLE because:
• Components are available and affordable
• We focus on WORKING PROTOTYPE
• Scope is clear and focused
• We have 1 semester to complete
• Supervisor will guide us"
"That's a good question.
Based on our current understanding,
[say what you think].
We will research this further
during our project development.
Thank you for the question."
