What is the thylakoid?

Pigment molecules in bilayer that trap light.

What is the Thylakoid membrane?

Composed of a phospholipid bilayer. Has protein pigment complex embedded in membrane. Traps light.

What is the photosystem?

Group of 40-500 pigment protein molecules. They absorb various wavelengths to make glucose.

What is chlorophyll?

The primary light absorber. Made up of a porphyrin ring and a phytol tail.

What is chlorophyll A?

Contains CH3 group. Absorbs more violet. Main trap pigment and only one that can pass light to other molecules.

What is chlorophyll B?

Contains aldehyde group. Absorbs more blue. Accessory pigment that passes light to chlorophyll A.

What is a light dependant reaction?

Light energy strikes chlorophyll, involves photosynthesis. Uses excited e- to make ATP and NADPH to make glucose.

Where does a light dependant reaction occur?

In the thylakoid membrane.

What is a light indépendant reaction?

Uses the Calvin cycle. Combines CO2 into glucose. Uses ATP and NADPH from light dependant reaction.

Where do light indépendant reactions occur?

In the stroma.
