Roosevelt believed everyone deserved a fair shot, the 3 C’s goal, first program by president to regulate big business and break up corporate monopolies. Nicknamed “Trust buster” they busted 25 corporate monopolies during his presidency while he saw the benefit of efficient monopolies, but wanted to control bad trusts.

Roosevelt wanted to protect buyers from corrupt businesses, when the Jungle came out in 1906, Roosevelt pressured congress to create consumer safety act making the Meat Inspection Act and Pure food and Drug act in 1906.

Roosevelt wanted to protect the environment, and during the gilded age, corporation clear-cut forests and exploited America’s natural resources but Roosevelt created the first national environmental conservation program. The government protected 195 million acres of land as national parks or forests.

It was from 1901 to 1909 and changed the United States. It was the first time the government assumed responsibility for the welfare of all citizens, regulated big business, and protected the environment.

William Howard Taft

When Roosevelt did not run for a third term in 1908, Roosevelt helped him win the presidency to continue his progressive agenda. Like Tr, pushed for progressive reforms including trusts(He busted twice as many monopolies as Roosevelt) and Labor Reform(Child Labor and Working Conditions). But sometimes he sided with the conservative wing of the Republican Party.

Taft supported a high tariff(tax on imports) which helped large corporations. Them and Roosevelt were disappointed by his performance.

Why did Taft anger Republicans?

Taft allowed 1 million acres of land that Roosevelt had set aside as conservation forests to be sold to businesses.

New political party formed by Theodore Roosevelt because when Roosevelt decided to run for president in 1912 the Republicans picked Taft as their candidate. Since Republican voters were divided between Taft and Roosevelt Woodrow Wilson won.
