New cards

First strength

Recognises the importance of cognitive factors in learning. We store information about the behaviour of others and make judgements based on this to perform certain actions. Observing others forms an idea of how new behaviours are performed. Suggests that SLT provides a comprehensive explanation of human learning by recognising the role of meditational processes

2

Counterpoint of the first strength

Has been criticised for making little reference to the influence of biological factors on social learning. Bandura claimed natural biological differences influences our learning potential, thought that learning was determined by the environment. A consistent finding in the research was that boys were often more aggressive than girls. May be explained by hormonal factors, levels of testosterone is linked to increased aggressive behaviour

3
New cards

Second strength

Support for the influence of social media on social learning in young people. Arunrangsiwed et al (2018) study. Supports SLT, shows that media can play a role in shaping social learning and behaviour through identification and imitation

Limitation

Evidence was gathered through lab studies. Many of Bandura’s ideas were developed through observation of children’s behaviour. Lab studies are often criticised, participants may respond to demand characteristics. Suggests that the research may not tell us exactly how children learn aggression in everyday life
