Parts of Speech

noun

a person, place, thing or idea (ex: cat, rat, downtown)

pronoun

a word used in place of a noun (ex: he/his, she/her, they/their, it)

verb

a word that expresses action or a state of being (ex: sleep, run, jump)

adjective

a word that describes a noun or a pronoun (ex: energetic, excited, annoying)

adverb

a word that describes a verb (ex: beautifully, quickly, softly)

preposition

a word that expresses the relationship between a noun and another word (ex: in, above, off, below, before/after, next to, up, down)

conjunction

a word that joins words, phrases, or clauses (ex: for, and, but, or, yet, so)

interjection

a word used to express emotion (ex: Oh, oh dear, Oops, hey, ouch, wow, whoa)

independent clause

A group of words that contains a subject, verb, and expresses a complete thought. An independent clause can stand on its own as a sentence.

dependent clause

adds more information to a sentence but cannot stand on its own as a sentence

a part of a sentence that contains the person or thing performing the action
