New cards

Conservation meaning

The maintenance of biodiversity through human action or management e.g maintains diversity between species, genetic diversity within species and the maintenance of habitat

2
New cards

Preservation meaning

protection of an area by restricting or banning human interference, so that the eco system is kept in its original state

3
New cards

Reclamation meaning

Restoring ecosystems that have been damaged or changed

4
New cards

Ecological reason for maintaining resources

Reasons concerning the potential impact on other species (and whole ecosystems) if certain species are not protected.

5
New cards

Economical reasons for maintaining resources

Reasons involving people, companies, or communities earning a living, or making more money from the biodiversity in a sustainable way

6
New cards

Aesthetic reasons for maintains resources

Reasons based around the beauty of nature and its ability to enrich lives and inspire people.

7
New cards

Social reasons for maintains biodiversity

Reasons that are for the benefit of society, providing area for relaxation, exercise, bird watching ….

8
New cards

Ethical reasons for maintaining biodiversity

Reasons based on the rights given to organising, or the environment by some people or the moral responsibility we have to future generation

9
New cards

What are the 3 R/s of sustainability

Reduce, reuse, recycle

10
New cards

What is meant by sustainable resources

A resources that is exploited economically so that it will not diminish or run out

11
New cards

What are the 5 aims of sustainability

  • Preserve the environment

  •  Ensure resource are available for future generations

  •  Allow humans in all societies to live comfortably

  •  Enable less economically developed countries to develop though exploiting their natural resources

  •  Create a more even balance in the consumption of these resources between more economically developed countries

12
New cards

What is clear felling

It is a productive and economical method of timber production, however the timber produced i small in size and not suitable for construction

13
New cards

What is strip felling

When narrow strips are cut so that forest on either side can regrow and reclaim the land, allowing forests to be logged with mininmum effect and damage. It is better then clear cutting but leads to habitat fragmentation

14
New cards

What is selective felling

Only older trees are felled and newer trees remain, ensuring continual regeneration of young seedling, works well for forests with fast growing trees. However helicopters are often needed and there is risk of damage to neighbouring trees

15
New cards

What is coppicing

The roots are maintained as the tree trunk is cut close to the ground so that the broad leaved tree can continue to grow, can be repeated indefinitely. However, herbivores have access to the newly forming shoots near the ground and can graze and damage these

16
New cards

What is pollarding

The tree trunk is cut high above the ground so there is less chance of damage from herbivory. But all trees are removed including their roots which is devastating for the natural environment
