Bill of Rights
The first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution that protect individual freedoms and limit government power.
Amendment 1
Prohibits Congress from making laws that establish religion or restrict free exercise, freedom of speech, press, assembly, and petition.
Amendment 2
Guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear Arms.
Amendment 3
Prohibits quartering of soldiers in private homes without consent during peacetime.
Amendment 4
Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures; requires probable cause for warrants.
Amendment 5
Guarantees due process, protection against double jeopardy and self-incrimination, and just compensation for takings.
Amendment 6
Ensures the right to a speedy trial, impartial jury, and legal counsel.
Amendment 7
Preserves the right to jury trials in civil cases involving more than twenty dollars.
Amendment 8
Prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments.
Amendment 9
Affirms that the enumeration of certain rights in the Constitution does not deny or disparage others retained by the people.
Amendment 10
Reserves powers not delegated to the federal government for the states or the people.
