Ivan Pavlov
Classical conditioning theory
Pavlov case study focused on
CONDITIONING TECHNIQUES
he did a study with a dog
Pavlov case study description
- pavlov surgically exposed the salivary glands of a dog
so that he could measure saliva secretions by placing the dog in a harness like apparatus
- each time food powder was inserted in a dogs mouth, the dog began to salivate
Unconditioned stimulus
the food powder
unconditioned response
food salivation
conditioned response
bell salivation
conditioned stimulus
the bell
the conditioned stimulus response (CSR)
the case study
pavlov was also impacted by
confounding variables
meaning: every time he would enter the room the dog would salivate
did the dog continue to salivate for the rest of its life?
NO pavlov was able to eliminate the conditioned stimulus response connection
pavlovs dog
after a consecutive number of trials (placing the food powder in the dogs mouth causing the dog to salivate), pavlov would sound a bell at the same time that he inserted the food powder in the dogs mouth
when the food powder and the bell were presented at the same time, pavlov could actually withhold the food powder but presented the bell alone, the dog would salivate.
