Informed Consent
A process by which subjects are told what a study is about and any risks involved before participating.
Right to Privacy
The ethical principle that protects subjects from being compelled to share information they do not wish to disclose.
Risk of Discomfort or Harm
The ethical consideration that researchers must evaluate to ensure that any risks to subjects are minimal and outweighed by potential benefits.
Deception
The controversial ethical issue in which subjects may be misled or falsely informed about a study's nature to examine the effects of that belief.
Benign Deception
Mild forms of deception that researchers justify as necessary for effective study, usually clarified during debriefing.
Debriefing
The process of informing subjects about the true nature of the study after their participation, especially if deception was used.
Special Consideration
An ethical guideline requiring extra attention to be given when subjects are children, incapacitated individuals, or prisoners.
