FOUR purposes of military drill
To enable a leader to move his unit from one place to another in a standard and orderly manner, to help cadets learn to safely and correctly handle drill rifles, to increase the confidence of cadets through exercise of command, and by giving proper commands, and by the direct control of drilling cadets, and to teach discipline by instilling habits of precision and automatic response to orders.

Differences in uniforms of NJROTC cadets and active duty personnel
Cadets do NOT wear commissioned officer rank insignia, combination cover bill, or sleeve braid.
Three ways to salute officers
1. Salute officers when meeting, passing near, addressing, or being addressed. 2. When overtaking an officer, the salute shall be given when abreast, with 'By your leave sir/ma'am.' 3. Upon the approach of an officer (one shall call attention, and all salute).
Three ways NOT to salute officers
1. When carrying articles with both hands. 2. When part of a work detail at work. 3. When under actual or simulated battle conditions.

Center
The middle element of a formation with an odd number of elements or the left center element of a formation with an even number of elements
Column
A formation in which elements are placed one behind the other
Commander of Troops (COT)
The COT is the senior cadet taking part in the ceremony
Depth
The space from head to rear of an element or a formation. The depth of an individual is 12 inches
Distance
The space between elements in the direction of depth. In formation the distance between ranks is 40 inches
Ceremony
A formal military formation designated to observe a specific occasion
Uniform
"Unus" and "Forma" meaning "one form" or "one body"
