Where is group 1 found in the periodic table
Far left hand side
What is group 1 known as
Alkali metals
Name the first 3 alkali metals
Lithium Li, Sodium Na, Potassium K
What is a Group
A group tells us how many electrons are in an atoms outermost shell
What is a period
The period number tells us how many shells are occupied
What happens to the reactivity as you go down group 1 and why
Reactive to Group 1 increases as you move down the group because they lose need to lose one electron to gain a full outer shell and the distance between the nucleus and the outer electron shell increases. This means it’s easier to lose the outer most electron because it’s held less tightly by the positive nucleus.
What are the rules for drawing electronic structure
Electrons to be spaced out clearly and effectively.
First shall have maximum two electrons
Electrons to be drawn with x’s
Every shell after can hold up to 8 electrons
Electrons fill shells from the nucleus out can be used when previous is full
Electrons orbit the nucleus in electron shells
What are isotopes
When an atom has a different number of neutrons, it becomes an isotope. The element remains the same because it has the same number of protons.
Formula for relative atomic mass
Ar= total mass of all atoms of element
Total number of atoms of that element
What are Ions
Ions are charged particles when elements lose or gain electrons they form ions which are positively or negatively charged
Properties of metals
High boiling/melting points
A conductor of electricity
Shiny
High density
Malleable and ductile
Solid
Properties of nonmetals
Gases
low melting points
can’t conduct electricity insulator
can’t conduct heat
Low density
What are elements?
Elements are substances that own that are only made up of one type of atom. I cannot be broken down into anything simpler.
What are compounds?
Compounds are substances that have more than one type of atom chemically bounded to each other
What are mixtures?
Mixtures are two or more substances going together that can be easily separated
What is filtration
What happens to the reactivity as you go down group 7 and why ?
The reactivity in group 7 decreases as you go down the group because distance between the nucleus and the outer shell increases this means it’s harder to gain an electron because there is less pull from the positive nucleus.
