Inchoate crimes
Crimes where there is the intent to commit a crime, but it is not committed or completed.
Accessory
A person who assists with a crime either before or after it occurs.
Conspiracy
A group of two or more people that plan a crime and take steps toward its execution.
Perjury
The act of lying under oath or lying while on the witness stand.
Contempt of court
The act of disrupting court proceedings.
Witness tampering
Attempting to change or stop a witness’s testimony.
Jury Tampering
Attempting to change or stop a juror’s testimony.
Obstruction of Justice
Interfering with a lawful investigation.
Bribery
Offering something of value to influence the actions of another person.
Hate Crimes
A crime committed against someone due to their race, color, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
Cybercrimes
Any crimes that involve the use of technology.
Civil law
The branch of law dealing with anything non-criminal.
Criminal law
Acts that are punishable by fines, prison time, or probation.
Statute
Legal rules and punishments written and enacted by a government.
Elements of a crime
The specific components or requirements that must be proven to convict someone of a crime.
Felony
A crime punishable by a year or more in prison and/or involving a value of 1500 or more.
Misdemeanor
A crime punishable by less than a year in jail and involving a value of less than 1500.
Common law
Legal rulings based on past judicial decisions.
Homicide
The act of causing the unlawful death of someone.
