Energy Conversion
The process of changing from one form of energy to another, governed by the 1st Law of Thermodynamics which states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed.
Thermodynamics
The study of how energy gets converted from one form to another, including the laws that govern energy transformation.
Magnetism
A natural phenomenon of attraction possessed by certain materials like iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt, capable of producing magnetic lines of force.
Electromagnetism
Magnetism produced by an electric current rather than by natural magnets, discovered by Hans Christian Oersted in 1820.
Magnetic Field
The space surrounding a magnet where magnetic force is exerted, with the direction of the field indicated by the force on a hypothetical North Pole.
Magnetic Field Lines
Representations of the magnetic field showing its shape, direction, and strength, with properties like originating from the North Pole and not intersecting.
Magnetic Flux
The number of magnetic lines of force in a magnetic field, measured in units like Weber and Maxwell.
Flux Density
The amount of flux passing through a unit area perpendicular to the flux, measured in units like Wb/m^2 (Tesla).
Permeability
The ability of a material to conduct magnetic flux, with relative permeability being the ratio to the permeability of air or vacuum.
Magnetizing Field Strength/Intensity
The force experienced by a unit N-pole within a magnetic field, measured in units like oersted or AT/m.
Magnetic Forces
Forces that act between magnets, magnetic materials, or moving charges.
Parallel Conductors
Conductors that are aligned in the same direction.
Field Strength
The intensity of a magnetic field at a particular point.
Lateral Repulsion
The force that causes objects to move away from each other laterally.
Armature Conductor
A conductor that rotates in a magnetic field to generate electromotive force.
Magnetic Flux
The measure of the total magnetic field passing through a given area.
