Space
is the 3 dimensional field in which the artist works. it may include positive and negative space.
Positive space
is the art of the work that physically occupies space
negatice space
is all the unfilled space that is activated by the piece.
Delineated spaces
the intentional outlining, separating, or defining of specific areas within a composition to create structure, focus, or depth. Artists use techniques like lines, color-blocking, or contrasting shapes to mark boundaries between different, often opposing, zones of the artwork. may serve a variety of aesthetic functions in a work.
spatial presence
The sense or feeling of space in or around an artwork, even when that space isn’t directly visible. Often through shapes, contours, or empty areas rather than being directly seen.
Eye lines
Similar to "leading lines" in photography, the line is used in figure composition to guide the viewer's gaze from one part of the artwork to another. or in this case draw the viewers attention around the surrounding space of the artwork.
Activated space
The deliberate, energetic use of areas around or within subjects to create visual tension, balance, or engagement, transforming "empty" space into an active design element. It makes negative space visually interesting rather than passive.
Participatory sculpture
is meant to be touched, climbed on, or swung from by viewers.
what kind of space is inviting?
Participatory sculpture
what kind of space might drive people away or feel intrusive?
Activated space
Confined spaces
these are boundaries the artist controls and specifically puts there art inside controlling filled and unfilled areas. instead of the art piece being out open.
Scale
the size of an object in relationship to other objects and to its surroundings
Monumental works
they may be nonobjective works so large in relation to human scale that they dwarf us, such as stonehedge or larger than life representations of familar objects.
What is the largest scale spectrum?
Monumental works
Forced persepctive
the exaggeration of linear perspective, the apparent converging of parallel lines toward the horizon
atmospheric perspective
where areas represented as being closer to the viewers are painted with sharper details, value contrasts, and color intensity than areas intended to appear farther away through atmospheric haze.
Line
is an area whose length is considerably greater than its width. a moving dot or a one-dimensional path created by a point in space. Used to define edges, create, structure, and convey emotion, lines vary in direction.
how does line appear in 3 dimensional art?
it may appear within the whole work but als may appear within forms or implied space. they can steer our attention in a particular direction or convey emotion.
Linear quality
everyday objects. the unique character, weight, and texture of lines—such as thick, thin, smooth, or broken, strict, curvy, is used to express emotion, define form, and create visual interest.
negative lines
he edges or shapes defined by the empty space around or between the main subject, rather than the outlines of the subject itself. can sometime be implied as there can be gaps and unfilled spaces.
earthworks
largescale 3 dimensional projects involving physical alterations of the earths surface for aesthetic purposes are designed to create a momumental line across the landscape.
edges
lines often create these.. the lines along which two plans or pieces of material meet.
Outlines
the distinction between outer contours of a piece and its aurrounding. are often made up of the edges.
when people say a piece has “nice lines.” what are they refuuring too?
they are usually talking about the piece’s edges.
how are edges seen as lines?
because of the difference in values. in values — in relative lightness and darkness. In carved sculptures, deep undercuts create shadows that define the edges bordering them.
Implied lines
may appear as eye lines between figures or between a figure and something at which it is gazing. they are certian lines that are not physically present in a work but are perceived.
Directional quality
the characteristic of pointing the viewers eye in a certain direction. sometimes creating implied lines.
read
we scan complex lines or rough edges more slowly. these natural tendencies lead us to think of lines as being “quick” or “slow.”
what feeling do horizontal lines give?
often carry a restful, secure feeling, perhaps through association with the earths horizon line and our horizontal position when sleeping
what feeling do vertical lines give?
do not convey stability. suggest defiance of or escape from earths graventational pull. can also mean strength and unmoving like pillars.
what feeling do diagonal lines give?
invoke feelings of drama or energy. ex. all pieces(beams/lines) are touching the wall and floor but adds a question are they holding it up or resting upon it?
kinetic art
certain works are designed to move and change through time.
Controlled time
Those works of art that are designed to move through a predetermined sequence of events exist.something stuck in motion.
Mobiles
changing sculptures activated by wind
Whirligigs
wind-powered kinetic sculptures or toys, often used as decorative garden ornaments, that capture wind energy with propellers to create engaging, animated motions. similar to a mobile.
kinetic sculpture performance
a 3D art form that blends sculpture, engineering, and performance, where art pieces move using motors, wind, water, or human interaction.
Performance art
also occupies a limited place in time. neverless allows artists to engage an auidnece for a brief time and perhaps leave a lasting impression. most often uses people in a setting.
what has performance art been used for?
do sed to make artistic statements about critical social issues, such as racism, militarism, and gender prejuduce.
Free time
opposite of controlled time. are shaped by factors beyond the artist's control. These pieces will therefore vary randomly and unpredictably through time.
