says your sample comes from a hypothesized (null) distribution

alternative hypothesis

says your sample does not come from the hypothesized distribution

p value

likelihood of observing your sample mean when μ is true

one sided hypothesis 

when you expect a mean difference in a particular direction

two sided hypothesis

when you are looking for a difference, but not in any particular direction

reject the null

to conclude that your sample does not come from the null distribution

fail to reject the null

to conclude that your sample could come from the null distribution

test to see if sample comes from a distribution with a hypothesized μ

t critical

max distance you expect a sample mean to be from μ (in SE)
