Protagonist. King of Ithaca. Journey to come home is the plot.
Telemachus
Son of Odysseus and Penelope. Goes to search for information of his father.
Penelope
Odysseus faithful wife. Renowned for beauty and wisdom.
Athena
Daughter of Zeus, goddess of wisdom/war. Assists Odysseus and Telemachus throughout epic.
Poseidon
god of the sea. Enemy of Odysseus because he blinded his son Polyphemus.
Zeus
King of gods. Allows Athena to help Odysseus, and sends Hermes to tell Calypso to free Odysseus.

Most outspoken suitor. Plans to kill Telemachus. First to be killed by Odysseus.

Loyal swine herd. Takes Odysseus in when he is disguised as a beggar. Fights alongside Odysseus in battle.

Old maid. Nursed Odysseus and Telemachus. Keeps Odysseus's identity secret after recognizing scar.
Melanthius
Goatherd who supports suitors. Abuses Odysseus when he is disguised as a beggar. Brother of the maid, Melantho.
Melantho
Maid in Odysseus's home. Insults Odysseus when he is disguised as a beggar. Is having an affair with Eurymachus. Sister of Melanthius.
Calypso
Beautiful nymph who lives on the island of Ogygia. Rescues Odysseus and keeps him for her own pleasure for seven years.
Polyphemus
Cyclops, son of Poseidon. Captures Odysseus and some of his crew. Odysseus outsmarts and blinds him. Before leaving Odysseus calls out his name, and he uses it to curse Odysseus to his father.
Circe
Beautiful witch-goddess. Transforms Odyesseus's crew into swine. Odysseus forces her to turn them back. He then lives with her in luxury for a year.
Laertes
Father of Odysseus. Regains spirit when Odysseus returns.
Tiresias
Prophet in the underworld. Instructs Odysseus how to return to Ithaca, and allows him to communicate with other souls.
Nestor
King of Pylos. Telemachus visits him to ask for information on his father, but he knows very little. Is making a sacrifice to Poseidon.
Menelaus
Red-haired King of Sparta. Brother of Agamemnon and husband of Helen. Lead Greeks in Trojan war. Gives Telemachus information on his father.
Helen
Wife of Menelaus, Queen of Sparta. She is so beautiful that when she was abducted from Sparta by Troy, it sparked the Trojan war. Offers Telemachus assistance in his quest.
Agamemnon
DEAD. Former King of Mycenae, brother of Menelaus. Murdered by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus when he came home from battle. Later avenged by son Orestes.
Nausicaa
Beautiful daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arete of Phaeacians. Odysseus approaches her after washing up on shore. Gives him clothes and tells him to go to her mother.
Alcinous
King of Phaeacians. Receives of Odyesseus and agrees to bring him home to Ithaca. Hosts festival to display the strength of the Phaeacians.
Arete
Queen of Phaecians, wife of Alcinous, and mother of Nausicaa. Influential, Odysseus approaches her first.
Anticleia
Mother of Odysseus. Dies of grief. Odysseus sees her in the Land of the Dead.
Philoetius
Loyal Cowherd of Odysseus. Fights with him in the end.
Argos
Odysseus's dog. Dies after seeing his master. Is taken by Athena.
Epithes
Father of Antinous (suitor). Leads charge against Odysseus.
Aeolus
King of Aeolia, a metal floating island. Master of winds, made immortal by the gods. 10 sons and daughters who are married to each other. Helps Odysseus, but abandons him after his crew commits mutiny.
Hermes
Messenger god. Convinces Calypso to let Odysseus go. Helps Odysseus on Circe's island.
Mentor
Elderly Ithacan leader. Supports Telemachus in town gathering. Also a disguise of Athena.
Pisistratus
Son of Menelaus. Accompanies Telemachus to Sparta.
Eidothea
Sea Nymph. Daughter of Proteus. Tells Menelaus how to trick her father into giving him information.
Proteus
Old Man of the Sea. Poseidon's right hand man. Shape shifter, but main form is a seal-man. Menelaus holds him down until he reveals the fates of his companions.
Iro
Mermaid that saves Odysseus with her veil after Poseidon capsizes his ship.
Mentes
Athena's first disguise. Old warrior that encourages Telemachus, and says he fought alongside his father.
Medon
Herald, faithful to Odysseus. Warns Penelope of the suitors plans to kill Telemachus. Telemachus tells Odysseus to spare him at the end.
Ajax
Fought in the Trojan war. Poseidon wrecked his ship, he would have survived, but he boasts and Poseidon take shim out.
Demodocus
Blind singer of the Phaeacians. Sings of Troy which Odysseus hears and they sadden him into telling his tale.
Scylla
Sea monster/serpent with six heads. Lives in sea cliffs.
Theoclymenus
Is fleeing from the friends of the man he killed. Telemachus gives him a ride on his ship.
Achilles
Great Trojan war hero that perished in battle. Odysseus encounters him the land of the dead.
