Open fractures (Fractura abierta)
When the bone fragment sticks out of the skin. It has a bigger risk of infection
Stable fracture (Fractura estable)
When the broken ends of the bone line up (generally easier to treat)
Transverse fracture (Fractura transversal)
Horizontal fracture line that breaks straight across the bone
Oblique fracture (Fractura oblicua)
It has an angled pattern and breaks diagonally across the bone
Comminuted fracture (Fractura comminuada)
When the bone shatters into three or more pieces, which is often a result from high impact injuries
Greenstick fracture (Fractura de tallo verde)
Unique to children since they have more flexible bones. It happens when the bone bends and cracks but doesn’t break completely
Buckle fracture (Fractura de hebilla)
Happens when one side of the buckles and the other stays intact. Common in children
Avulsion fracture (Fracture por avulsion)
When a ligament or tendon pulls off a piece of bone. More common in athletes during rapid direction changes
Pathological fracture (Fractura patolĂłgica)
Occurs when the bones are weakened by disease (ex. Osteoporosis, cancer, infections)
