Internet
Worldwide collection of interconnected networks that connects millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals.
ARPANET
The precursor to the Internet, created in 1969 to share information among scientists and to remain functional if part of the network failed.
Broadband connections
High-speed Internet connections that include wired and wireless options such as cable, DSL, FTTP, Wi‑Fi, mobile broadband, fixed wireless, and satellite.
Cable Internet service
Broadband connection delivered over a cable television network.
DSL
Digital Subscriber Line; a broadband technology that uses existing telephone lines.
Fiber to the Premises (FTTP)
Broadband delivering optical fiber directly to the user’s premises.
Wi‑Fi
Wireless networking technology for local Internet access.
Mobile broadband
Internet access provided over cellular networks on mobile devices.
Fixed wireless
Broadband connection using fixed wireless links between locations.
Satellite Internet Service
Broadband service delivered via communication satellites.
Hotspot
A wireless network that provides Internet connections to mobile computers and devices.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
A business that provides individuals and organizations with access to the Internet.
Bandwidth
A measure of the capacity of a network to send and receive data.
IP address
A sequence of numbers that uniquely identifies a device on a network.
IPv4 address
A 32-bit IP address.
IPv6 address
A 128-bit IP address.
Domain name
A text-based name that corresponds to the IP address of a server.
DNS server
Translates domain names into IP addresses.
Top-level domain (TLD)
The highest level of the domain name system; examples include .com, .org, .net, .gov, .edu.
URL (web address)
The address used to locate a specific webpage on the World Wide Web.
Home page
The first page that a website displays.
Web browser
An application that enables users to access and view webpages.
Mobile browser
A browser designed for Internet-capable mobile devices.
Tabbed browsing
Feature that allows multiple webpages to be opened in separate tabs.
Web server
A computer that delivers requested webpages to your device.
HTML
Hypertext Markup Language; used to structure and format web content.
World Wide Web (WWW)
A system of interlinked documents accessed via the Internet.
Website
A collection of related webpages and associated items.
Web app
An application stored on a web server that you access through a browser; often stores user data on the server.
Web publishing
The creation and maintenance of websites.
Plan the website
Initial planning step in web publishing to organize structure and content.
Design the website
Creating the layout, appearance, and user experience.
Create the website
Building web pages and features.
Maintain the website
Ongoing updates and management of content and functionality.
Host the website
Storing website files on a server so they are accessible on the Internet.
Multimedia
Applications that combine text with graphics, animation, audio, video, or VR.
Graphic
Visual representation of nontext information; formats include BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF.
Infographic
A visual representation of data designed to communicate quickly and clearly.
Animation
The appearance of motion created by displaying a sequence of still images.
Audio
Music, speech, or other sound elements.
Video
Images displayed in motion.
Virtual Reality (VR)
Use of computers to simulate a real or imagined 3D environment.
360-degree VR
A panoramic VR experience that allows viewing in all directions.
Transmission of messages and files via a computer network.
Chat
Real-time typed conversations online.
Chat room
A website or app that allows online users to chat with others in real time.
Online discussion
An online area where users write discussions about a topic.
VoIP
Voice over IP; technology to speak to others over the Internet.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol; standard for uploading and downloading files over a network.
Netiquette
Code of acceptable Internet behavior and manners.
Search engine
is software that finds websites, webpages, images, videos, news, maps, and other information related to a specific topic.
Subject directory
classifies webpages in an organized set of categories, such as sports or shopping, and related subcategories.
