Medical Technology Code of Professional Ethics (READ)

• As I enter into the practice of Medical Technology, I shall…

  • ACCEPT the responsibilities inherent to being a professional.

  • UPHOLD the law & shall not engage in illegal work nor cooperate with anyone so engaged.

  • AVOID associating or being with any enterprise or questionable character.

  • WORK & act in a spirit of fairness to employer, clients, contractors, employee, and in a spirit of personal helpfulness and fraternity toward other members of the profession.

  • USE only honorable means of competition for professional employment or services and shall refrain from unfairly, injuring, directly or indirectly, the professional reputation projects business of a fellow medical technologist.

  • ACCEPT employment from more than one employer only when there is no conflict of interest.

  • PERFORM professional work in a manner that merits full confidence & trust carried out with absolute reliability, accuracy, fairness, and honest.

  • REVIEW the professional work of other medical technologist, when requested, fairly and in confidence whether they are subordinates or employees, authors of proposals for grant or contracts, authors of technical papers or other publications involved in the litigation.

  • ADVANCE the profession by exchanging general information and experience with fellow medical technologist and other professionals and by contributing to the work of the professional organization.

  • RESTRICT my praises, criticism, views, and opinions within constructive limits and shall not use the knowledge I know for selfish ends.

  • TREAT any information I acquired about individuals in the course of my work as strictly confidential and may be divulged only to authorized persons or entities or with consent of the individual when necessary.

  • BE DEDICATED to the use of clinical laboratory science to promote life and benefit of mankind.

  • REPORT any infractions of these principles of professional conduct to the authorities responsible for enforcement of applicable laws or regulations, or to the Ethics Committee of the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists as may be appropriate.

• To these principles, I hereby subscribe & pledge to conduct myself at all times in a manner befitting the dignity of my profession.

MedTech Prayer

God, who by calling us to the vocation of a medical technologists, has placed upon us the obligation of being a constant help in the scientific care of the sick, grant us by thy divine light a deep insight into the serious responsibilities of our task.

By thy divine wisdom awaken in us a growing zeal and determination to increase our knowledge of how to search for the underlying causes of sickness and disease; how to recognize the evidence of physical changes; how to make important chemical analyses, and other valuable test so helpful in caring for the sick.

By thy divine love permit us in this way to share with those who directly care for the sick, that thus we may be of constantly working through the eternal physician, Christ our Lord, Amen.

Autonomy

• The patient has the right to refuse or choose the treatment

  • Respect a person's right to make their own decisions

  • Do not force or coerce people to do things

  • "Informed Consent"

Beneficence

• To do good

• As practitioners we should act in the best interest of the patient

  • Act on behalf of 'vulnerable' people to protect their rights

  • Our actions must aim to 'benefit' people – health, welfare, comfort, well-being, improve a person's potential, improve quality of life

Non-Maleficence

• To do no harm

  • Where evil or harm should not be inflicted either on one self or the others

  • Do not inflict harm on people

  • Do not cause needless pain or suffering

  • Do not kill

Justice

• It is the distribution of scarce health resources and the decision who gets what treatment in terms of fairness and equality.

  • Treating people fairly

  • Not favoring some individuals / groups over others

  • Respect for people's right

Active Euthanasia

taking the life of the patient

Passive Euthanasia

omitting to prolong the life of the patient

Voluntary Euthanasia

Euthanasia performed with the patient's consent

Non-Voluntary Euthanasia

• Where the patient is unable to give their informed consent

• Ex: Child Euthanasia

Involuntary Euthanasia

Which performed on a patient against their will

Informed Consent

Decision reached by a competent patient to accept a medical treatment or course of treatment

Part of the requirement for any type of scientific research involving human and animal participants

Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

Requirement for scientific research involving biohazard pathogens such as bacteria, virus, parasite, fungi, etc

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Requirement for scientific research involving animal use activity and inspection of animal facilities for testing organisms, new type of drugs and other therapeutic approach
