How does mass affect the speed of our boats?

Mass affects the speed of our boats by increasing the weight of the boat, making it a greater force to pull. The band cannot handle the force, causing the boat to slow down.

2
New cards

Buoyancy

Buoyancy affects the boat because of the material. A boat is buoyant if the mass and density of the boat is less than the waters mass and density. Boats with heavy materials and ones that were flat sank.

3
New cards

Potential and Kinetic energy

The winding of the band is potential energy, and the moving of the boat is kinetic energy.

potential energy-energy that is stored due to the interactions between objects

occurred when the rubber band is about to be released

thickness of rubber band is a variable because it can wind more times when it is thinner

kinetic energy-energy due to motion

transferred from potential energy because when it is wound, it is potential; the unwinding of the rubber band is moving the propeller, pushing water away from you so that the boat is moving in the opposite direction

4
New cards

Fluid Friction

Our water did not have fluid friction because we did not add waves or wind.

fluid friction-the force that resists the movement of an object through a fluid or within a fluid itself

constant resistance against the boat; using energy to propel forward; consistent because there are no waves when boat sinks more fluid friction is added because the force makes waves

5
New cards

Engineering and design process

We used the engineering and design process by revising our design, drafting ideas and looking at other tracks for inspiration.

6
New cards

Connection between force, velocity and acceleration

force, (rubber bands) Velocity (speed) acceleration. Connected because the graphs follow the same trends and slopes of the mass and velocity/acceleration.

7
New cards

Newton’s First Law of Motion-inertia

law of inertia-an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an external force; an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an external force

after rubber band finished unwinding, it is still moving but it just gets stopped by external force such as wall

8
New cards

Newton’s Third Law of Motion-action and reaction

law of action and reaction-for every action (force) in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction

if the boat hit the end, there would be an action and opposite reaction

9
New cards

Newton’s Second Law of Motion-force

law of force-the acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied

When the boats took more mass, they needed more force because it was harder for it to go faster, and the band had to be winded more.
