Foramen
Hole through which blood vessels, nerves, or ligaments pass (e.g., foramen magnum, obturator foramen, transverse foramen of the cervical spine, vertebral foramen).
Fossa
Hollow or depression in a bone (e.g., supraspinous fossa, infraspinous fossa of the scapula; glenoid fossa of the scapula).
Groove
Ditch-like structure that houses a blood vessel or tendon (e.g., bicipital groove of the humerus).
Condyle
Rounded, knuckle-like projection (e.g., medial or lateral femoral condyle).
Epicondyle
Prominence adjacent to a condyle or other joint structure (e.g., medial humeral epicondyle; lateral femoral epicondyle).
Tubercle
Small rounded projection (e.g., greater tubercle of the humerus).
Tuberosity
Large rounded projection (e.g., ischial tuberosity).
Trochanter
Large prominence (e.g., greater trochanter of the femur).
Spine
Long thin projection (e.g., scapular spine; spinous process of the vertebra).
Crest
Sharp ridge or border (e.g., iliac crest).
Line
Less prominent ridge or border (e.g., linea aspera of the femur).
Head
Rounded projection beyond a narrow neck of a long bone (e.g., femoral head; humeral head).
Facet
Flat or shallow articular surface (e.g., intervertebral facet joints; articular facet of rib).
