Thermosettings plastics
Plastics that once heated and shaped can't be remoulded. THey are permanently shaped and are incredibly heat resistant.
TSP - Epoxy Resin Properties
High strength and good chemical and wear resistance
TSP - Urea Formaldehyde
Rigid, hard, brittle and good insulator
TSP - Melamine Formaldehyde
Rigid, strong and scratch resistant
Natural Timber
Woods that are naturally grown i.e. from trees
Softwoods
Woods that have come from a Coniferous Trees. These trees are Evergreen and don't loose their leaves/ keep growing in Winter.
Hardwoods
Woods that come from Deciduous Trees. Loose their leaves and stop growing in winter. Start growing and produce fruit/flowers in Spring.
Man-Made Boards
Manufactured using woods and adhesives. Are not natural.
Ferrous Metal
Contain Iron and are magnetic and can rust
Non Ferrous Metal
Do Not contain Iron, are not magnetic and tarnish
Warp
when woods become deformed and twist due to moisture and air
Veneer
A thin slice of more expensive woods that is often applied to manufactured boards to improve appearance and give an impression of high cost
Laminate
Often used in flooring and furniture, where a printed layer is applied to a man-made board to make it look more appealing. Often topped with a clear protective coating.
Aesthetically Pleasing
When a product is highly appealing to the senses e.g. looks good, has a pleasant smell, etc
Knots
Small dark circles in natural woods where the branches of the tree have been growing
Alloy
Mixtures of 2 or more metals in order to gain the best properties from both
Ductile
The ability of materials to be drawn out/stretched without breaking
Malleable
The ability of a material to be compressed without breaking
MB - Plywood Properties
Very Strong, durable and won't warp
MB - Plywood Common uses
Furniture
MB - MDF Properties
Medium Density Fibreboard - Smooth and even surface, easy to machine and often veneered
MB - MDF Common uses

Ferrous - Stainless Steel Properties
An alloy with chromium and nickel, doesn't rust and easy to sterilise
Ferrous - Stainless Steel Common uses
Kitchen utensils, surgical instruments and teapots
Non-Ferrous - Aluminium Properties
Lightweight, can be polished and malleable
Non-Ferrous - Copper Properties
Can turn green after being exposed to moisture, good conductor and malleable
Non-Ferrous - Tin Properties
Ductile and malleable and resistant to corrosion
Non-Ferrous - Aluminium Common uses
Cooking foil, saucepans and chocolate wrappers
Non-Ferrous - Copper Common uses
