Need
An inherent condition essential for life, growth, and well-being.
Intraorganismic Mechanisms
Internal biological processes that regulate physiological drives.
Extraorganismic Mechanisms
Environmental, social, and cognitive influences that activate or maintain physiological drives.
Self-Determination Theory (SDT)
A framework positing that human well-being depends on the satisfaction of three universal psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
Autonomy
The need to feel that one’s actions originate from the self rather than from external pressure.
Competence
The need to be effective in interactions with the environment and to master challenges.
Relatedness
The need to establish close emotional bonds and attachments with others.
Motivation Continuum
A spectrum of motivation ranging from Amotivation to Intrinsic Motivation.
Internalization
The process of moving toward self-determined motivation.
Flow State
A subjective state of deep absorption in an activity where time seems to disappear.
Optimal Challenge
A task challenge that perfectly matches one's skill level, preventing boredom or anxiety.
Acquired Needs
Needs that are learned through social experience and operate unconsciously.
Need for Achievement
Striving for excellence against a standard.
Need for Affiliation
Seeking approval and warm, secure relationships.
Need for Power
Wanting to have a physical or social impact on others.
Burnout
A state that often occurs when the three psychological needs are consistently frustrated.
