Reconstruction

A period in American history immediately after the Civil War in which America attempted to rebuild the country.

White Supremacy

a belief system that asserts the superiority of the white race over all other races. It has been used to justify discrimination, oppression, and violence against non-white people.

Knavery

a deceitful or dishonest act

Black Codes

These were laws passed in the South after the Civil War that restricted the rights and freedoms of Black people. Black Codes made it difficult for Black people to find work, own property, and move freely.

Historiography

is the study of the methods of historians in developing history as an academic discipline, and by extension is any body of historical work on a particular subject.

Black codes

restricted black people's right to own property, conduct business, buy and lease land, and move freely through public spaces.

Jim Crow Laws

state and local laws introduced in the Southern United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that enforced racial segregation.

Benevolence

an act of kindness or an inclination to be kind.
