Characteristics of Living Things
The common attributes that all living organisms share: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Excretion, Growth, Nutrition, Reproduction.
Movement
An action by an organism or a part of an organism causing a change of position or place.
Respiration
The chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy for metabolism.
Sensitivity
The ability to detect and respond to changes in the internal or external environment.
Excretion
The removal of waste products of metabolism and substances in excess of requirements.
Growth
A permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number.
Nutrition
The taking in of materials for energy, growth, and development.
Reproduction
The processes that result in the production of more individuals of the same kind of organism.
Fertilization
The process where an egg and sperm unite to form a zygote.
Zygote
The fertilized egg that contains 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs.
Binary Fission
A type of asexual reproduction in which a parent bacterial cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cells.
Embryo
A developmental stage following the zygote, containing 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs.
