Jingoism

Intense Patriotism that called for an aggressive foreign policy that included the threat or use of force to achieve U.S. goals

Big Stick

President Theodore Roosevelt's bold and aggressive "Big Stick" policy

Big Stick policy, in American history, policy popularized and named by Theodore Roosevelt that asserted U.S. domination when such dominance was considered the moral imperative.

Insular Cases

The U.S. constitution did not apply to native people in U.S. occupied territories

Moral Diplomacy

Opposed imperialism and big stick policy. Belief that U.S. involvement should be to promote rights and democracy not protect U.S. businesses and sought to undo injustices of past presidents

Jones Act

It installed democracy in The Philippines and promised future Philippine independence

Selective Service Act

Allowed the Federal Government to temporarily expand the military through conscription and required all men in the U.S. between the ages of 21 and 30 to register for military service. Another word for draft.

Mobilize

The organization of all resources of a nation for support of the military effort.

Hysteria (wartime)

Emotional, irrational fear towards German-Americans(Hans)

Isolationism

A nation staying of conflicts involving other countries' affairs

Sedition Act

Outlawed disloyal or critical remarks against the government or the war effort

Great Migration

African-Americans left the south for industrial jobs in the north.

Liberty Bonds

loaned the government money to help pay for the costs of wartime military operations. After a certain number of years, those who invested in these bonds would receive their money back, plus interest.

Zimmerman Note

Germany offered U.S territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause/ attack the US

Sussex Pledge

A pledge made by Germany to keep the U.S. out of the war

War Industries Board

Created to coordinate America's factories, farms and resources

Wilson's proposal for the peace treaty-insisted on "peace without victory"-making the Great War the "war to end all wars"

Created to increase public support for the war.

Conscientious Objector

One who is opposed to serving in the armed forces and/or bearing arms on the grounds of moral or religious principles.
