Yes, should advise isolation (so not liable/vunerable) but realistically might not be possible
Why does cushings affect wound healing?
impairs neutrophil function, so more likely to get infection and slow wound healing
How much detomidine and butorphanol should you use?
dosage for both is 0.1 ml per 100kg of horse
What local anaesthetic should you use?
mepivacaine (licensed in horses)(trade name intraepicaine?)
sometimes use bupivacaine (lasts longer)
Which structures might be involved?
extensor tendons (not really needed by horse can learn to live without, possible surgery to fix?), canon bone (fracture? sequestrum formed? - sequestrum would need removing as wound wonât heal.)
What do we need to look at for making a plan for a wound?
how dirty is the wound, placement and structures involved
What do you need to do to assess wound?
sedate, give local block, lavage, probe (find pockets, might need to place drain), debride
What is important to remember to give with sedation?
pain relief!
What is the prognosis for this wound?
pretty good prognosis

if not closable - weeks (number of weeks depends on size), due to second intention healing
if closable - 10-14 days
What can be done to speed up healing of granulation bed?
skin grafts - cuts weeks off healing time
