Normal latency
The time it takes for frames to travel across the network medium and through network devices.
Latency
The delay experienced by a frame or packet traveling from the source station to the final destination.
Layer 2 devices
Devices that are more intelligent than Layer 1 devices, such as bridges and switches.
Bridge
A Layer 2 device used to divide or segment a network.
Switch
A Layer 2 device also referred to as a multi-port bridge, creating virtual circuits between devices.
Router
A Layer 3 device used to direct traffic between different networks.
Ethernet
A networking technology that uses CSMA/CD and can support fast transmission rates.
BNC
A type of coaxial cable connector used in networking.
NIC
Network Interface Card
PING
A network diagnostic tool used to test connectivity between devices.
LAN
Local Area Network, a network that covers a small geographic area.
WAN
Wide Area Network, a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area.
UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair, a type of cabling used in networking.
DTE
Data Terminal Equipment, the end device that receives or generates data.
DCE
Data Circuit-terminating Equipment, the device that facilitates a connection between DTE devices.
User exec mode
A limited access mode in which basic commands can be executed on a router.
Privileged exec mode
A higher access mode that allows for more advanced commands and configurations.
Memory components of a router
Includes ROM, RAM, and NVRAM, which retain contents when power is absent.
