What is a headland?
a narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea.
What is a spit?
Long protrusions of sand and pebbles
How are spits formed?
Spits are created when the coastline ends and the process of longshore drift continues; meaning sediment is deposited off the coast. If the conditions are right, sediment will build up to form new land, which will extend along the coastline. The end of a spit will be curved due to winds such as prevailing wind
What is swash?
The forward movement of a wave up the beach as the wave breaks
What is backwash?
The movement of water down the beach due to gravity after a wave breaks
What is a bay?
An indentation in the coastline between two headlands.
What is rotational slumping?
The base of the cliff moves and other material then slumps across the beach
How is a wave-cut notch formed?
Waves erode the base of the cliff, making an indentation (the wave-cut notch)
What is longshore drift?
Where beach sediment is moved up and down the beach profile by waves in different ways
