Expansionism
the policy of expanding a countries economy or territory (spread their influence)
Containment
policies made to restrict the spread of a hostile element such as an enemy
Marxism
A radical form of socialism created in response to the Industrial Revolution, ideas inspired by the French Revolution
Proliferation
To build up as many weapons as possible in order to have more weapons than your enemy
Non-Alignment
Opposition and/or resistance to a controlling nation e.g Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia
Brinkmanship
The attempt to push a dangerous situation as far as possible without conceding your opponent
Detterence
To discourage a hostile nation for taking action or prevent something from happening, usually by means of building up weaponry or nuclear arsenal to intimidate enemy nations

A term used to describe beliefs and actions that appear to be outside of accepted political and social norms
McCarthyism
Anti Communist movement in the US led by Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s. Its purpose was to uncover and prosecute communist spies
Proxy Wars
Conflicts where one superpower provides support to a group or state that opposes the rival superpower
Monetarism
Claims that control of a countries money supply is the best means to encourage economic growth and limit unemployment and inflation
NEP
National Energy Program (1980-1985) sought to secure Canadian energy independence
Collectivization
An economic policy where all land is taken away from private owners and combined in large collectively worked farms
Enabling Act
Infamous act that democratically gave Hitler dictatorial power and pass legislation without Reichstag consent
Eugenics
Adopted by the Nazis to justify their treatment of Jews, disabled peoples, and other minorities
Yalta Agreement
Allies met to discuss final wartime actions and decide on the future of Europe, particularly the future of Germany
Truman Doctrine
Declaration that the USA would pledge to help to free peoples resisting foreign pressures, a method of containment
Marshall Plan
Money pledged by the USA to Europe to strengthen war torn countries and prevent the appeal and spread of communism
Nation Building
Process of creating a strong, unified country by developing a stable government, shared identity, effective institutions, and infrastructure
Indoctrination
Takes the place of education, citizens and youth esp. are not given a choice of belief. Conformity measures success not creativity
